World Cricket: The History Of West Indies And England

Inaugural Trophy 1963,

With the increasing Caribbean following in England, West Indies was also known as the most popular touring nation, as they also entered the series. The West Indies won the first test match at Old Trafford as the 11 wickets scored by Lance Gibbs helped them a commanding ten win over England. The second test match held at Lords is memorable for the dramatic ending. All the results were possibly going to the final over of the game as the England cricket Team required eight runs to win as they only had two wickets in hand. Eventually, the match ended in a draw. The third match was won by England with 217 runs, as Fred Trueman claimed 12 wickets. But as a result, West Indies also won two test matches and finished the series with 3-1. Charlie Griffth’s 6/36 in the fourth test match and Conrad Hunte’s 108 in the final test match helped them win the series.

Gary Sobers’ Series 1966,

Gary Sobers was the captain of the WI cricket team, while during the 5 test series, England had three captains: Mike Smith (First Test), Cowdrey (Second – Fourth Test), and Brain Close (Fifth Test). Garry Sobers exceptional all-around performance overshadowed many of West Indies’ shortcomings, but the team was not as strong as in the previous series. The West Indies won the first test, England failing in both innings as Gibbs took ten wickets for West Indies. West Indies again won the match and took the series to 2-0 as Butcher’s 209 secured victory. Tom Grabeney’s 165 and 128 run partnership for the tenth wicket gave England a consolation win. The fourth test was Sobers best performance, where he scored 174 runs and followed by taking 5/41 as this gave his team a 3-0 lead in the final test match. Despite this, Sobers’ outstanding performance stood out as he scored 722 runs, took 20 wickets, and took ten catches.

1976 Viv Richards’ series

With England entering the series in great confidence, captain Greig said he had the players to make the West Indies groove. But the threat was an empty one, as it became evident that England had no answer to Viv Richards Batting and Micheal Holdings bowling. The first two tests ended in draws, but from the third test, west indies took complete control as Richards scored 524 runs in the last three tests. Holding, who took 25 wickets in these three tests, supported him. This series is mainly remembered for Richard’s batting, as he scored 829 runs in four tests.

2000-07 England Dominance

The English team was led by Hussain, while Jimmy Adams was the West Indies captain. It was a 5 test match series, as the west indies effortlessly registered the first win by 93 runs. A turning point in the game was when West Indies got dismissed for 54 runs in the second inning. England won the test match and seized the series by winning the fourth and fifth tests to regain the trophy 3-1 after 31 years.
