When you are going to the gym or exercising outdoors, you need to dress for the occasion. While you don’t have to purchase the latest and expensive workout clothes, you should also avoid wearing the wrong ones. This brings us to the question: Can you wear streetwear for working out?
There are mixed answers here, which is why it can get confusing whether streetwear is appropriate workout clothing or not. Read on to find out!
Can I Use Streetwear for Working Out?
Usually, you can’t use streetwear or casual clothes when working out. This is because some streetwear materials are made of cotton and other kinds of fabric that don’t wick away sweat. Instead, the sweat would absorb into the fabric poorly, which can lead to discomfort and sweat sticking to your back.
Furthermore, you won’t be able to move as freely when wearing certain streetwear. For instance, if you wear a Streetwear – hoodie from brands like FourOneTwo, it can result in feeling too hot and not being able to do functional exercises because it may be too tight or the loose fit gets in the way.
And speaking of the heat, the streetwear may not be suitable for the weather you will exercise in. Wearing a Streetwear t-shirt may not be enough if you exercise outdoors during the winter area, or it can be too hot to wear streetwear jackets during the summer. As a result, you are more prone to sicknesses and/or overheat from wearing the wrong clothes during extreme weather conditions and temperatures.
Lastly, certain streetwear should not be used as workout clothes as it can be more prone to wear and tear. Your favorite (and maybe expensive) streetwear top can end up being damaged when running and accidentally ripping it from a stray branch or random stains!
That said, it is possible to wear streetwear for working out, as long as they are made of the right materials made for wicking sweat away. There are activewear brands and styles that can double as streetwear, making them functional and versatile. Just make sure that you are sure they are made of proper material before using them.
Besides streetwear, here are other types of clothes you should avoid wearing as well:
- Bikinis may attract unwanted attention and won’t support your chest properly
- Short shorts would leave unmentionables flapping with the wind, or like bikinis, attract unwanted attention. This goes for both men and women!
- Denim is a HUGE no-no! The humidity and sweat created would have denim cling to the body, with the sweat making things very uncomfortable
- Sandals and boots, as boots are very thick and heavy for your feet to move properly, while sandals don’t provide enough support. You need the right gym shoes made of breathable materials and can survive the wear and tear from physical activity.
Wrapping It Up
While it is possible to wear streetwear when working out, it has to be made with the correct materials made for exercise and physical activities. Fortunately, there are brands offering clothes for streetwear style that you can use for exercise!
