Over the past years, the way of taking pictures has drastically changed. Yet, its importance never really falters. With that in mind, there is a need for you to properly learn the techniques of taking playground photos for your portfolio.
With commercial play structures, it’s got a bit trickier trying to take photos of them. The key here follows some of the actionable tips mentioned below.
Don’t opt for the traditional “Say Cheese” pose
The thing about playgrounds is that you need to able to capture the people in it at the moment. Thus, you must throw away the traditional poses, such as the “look at me,” “smile,” or the ever famous “say cheese.”
Instead, go for children who are in the moment or those who are simply playing. You’ll be surprised to see the numerous shots that are so good without ever really arranging the setup.
Try to change your perspective
The playground has so many commercial play structures. Use these and try to change your perspective. Again, stray away from the traditional techniques and try to be more creative. Moreover, with the many structures that are made available to you, it’s won’t be long to find something that will surely stand out.
In fact, a good example of trying to change your perspective will be discussed in the succeeding post.
Use commercial play structures as frames
There’s just so much going on in a playground. Furthermore, the structures are so different. One of these structures will be able to provide you with a great frame for your photo. The key to doing so is always thinking outside the box.
Use zoom lens
This tip may or may not work for you as taking photos of a playground and the children in it is always at one’s preference; however, try zooming the lens more often so that you can capture the kids at play. One advantage in doing so allows you to “fill in the frame.” You can move the elements in the photo and fill it in with what matters the most.
Wait for eye contact
This is a great actionable tip in balancing photos that are in action and being able to capture the fun and enjoyment of the child as they play around the swing or going down the slide. Moreover, you don’t have to worry too much because, every now and then, they will make eye contact.
All you need to do is to ensure that you have your camera ready to take the shot. It doesn’t matter where you are in the playground. You can even take the shot when you are across from them!
Remember, a playground is a place where children get their first taste of the real world. It’s where they form friendships and mold their identities. Your photos should be able to capture the emotions of the children as they get a glimpse into what freedom – with a little adult intervention – feels like.
